Early in life, Adams settled into an outdoor life, becoming a skilled hunter. He profited through the sale of meat, but also caught many animals alive and sold them. Part 2 describes his trip to the Rockies. It is largely an account of the hunting, but also describes capturing many live animals including wolf cubs and cougar kits from their dens. Outside of their capture, there is little on Lady Washington and Ben Franklin, although some interesting detail is included such as getting Lady Washington to carry a pack and on one occasion to pull a cart. Adams used moccasins on Ben Franklin in the desert where sharp Stones had cut his feet.

The event where Ben Franklin saved Adams is detailed. It is disappointing there is not more on the habits of the grizzly, but the narrative was written by a biographer rather than Adams himself.
